Charlottesville City Schools Lease-to-Own Agreement at Oak Lawn
In September, the UVA Board of Visitors approved a lease-to-own agreement for the Oak Lawn property to Charlottesville City Schools. The property, which is located next to Charlottesville Middle School, is approximately 5 acres, and the lease will have a nominal fee of $1 per year. CCS hopes to use the property for an early learning center as well as some administrative offices, and a family welcome center. Learn more about the agreement here.
School Resource Officers (SROs) Return
Charlottesville City Schools has continued to solicit community feedback on its plan to restore school resource officers (SROs) beginning in Fall 2026. Thanks to community input, the group drafting the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Charlottesville Police Department is making the following changes:
- Reducing the number of SROs from 4 to 2 and reducing program costs
- Incorporating language and ideas from the NYCLU model Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)
- Building out specifics of how CCS will co-select and train the SROs
- Defining what circumstances would signal an automatic termination of the program
- Evaluating the program’s metrics and developing ongoing feedback tools to ensure accountability
Community feedback sessions will continue through October, and the new draft of the MOU will be published on October 3th, ahead of the October 9th School Board meeting. Find more information about SROs, including answers to frequently asked questions.
Honoring Trailblazers
September 8th marked the 66th anniversary of the day the Charlottesville 12 integrated Charlottesville Public Schools. Trailblazer Elementary School celebrated its 100th anniversary on that day with games, activities, music, and a speech from Principal Beverly honoring the Charlottesville 12. The Virginia General Assembly also passed a resolution to honor these 12 Civil Rights trailblazers.
