VIRGINIA DISCOVERY MUSEUM
The Virginia Discovery Museum (VDM), an independent non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, is an interactive, educational museum for young children.
How Charlottesville’s Children’s Museum Began
VDM started in 1981 to create traveling exhibits in Central Virginia. As interest grew, the Board of Directors sought a permanent home in Charlottesville. Initially housed in a two-story building, VDM quickly outgrew it. In 1990, the museum moved to its current spot on Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall. VDM not only developed new exhibits but also launched on-site educational programs and special events for families. To support the community, VDM reached out to low-income families, extended its hours, collaborated with local schools, and joined tourism and economic development efforts.
Plan Your Visit to the Virginia Discovery Museum
The Virginia Discovery Museum is on the East End of the Downtown Mall in Charlottesville. It’s a must-visit for families with young kids. Designed for ages 1 to 8, this hands-on museum promotes creativity and learning through interactive exhibits like the Little C’Ville play town, STEM Lab, and Literacy Lounge.
Parents will love the focus on educational play in a safe, fun space. Many enjoy a family stroll on the pedestrian mall or a picnic in nearby parks after their visit. With stroller parking, family restrooms, and rotating exhibits and events, it’s perfect for locals and tourists. Planning your trip is simple—admission is affordable, and you can make timed-entry reservations online for a relaxed experience.
Today, VDM attracts visitors from all over the country and the world, but it remains a cherished local institution.
