Activities for Kids at the Montpelier Hunt Races

Stick Pony Races

One of the highlights for little ones will undoubtedly be the stick pony races. Children aged 2 to 11 can unleash their inner jockeys and race their trusty stick ponies in a fun competition.  Pre-registration for the races is free and can be done at the Montpelier Store Tent. The stick pony races will follow the Terrier Races, and participants can either bring their own stick horse or purchase one from the 4-H Club, which will offer handmade options for sale.

Terrier Races

Another crowd-pleaser at the Montpelier Hunt Races is the Jack Russell terrier races, where spirited pups dash toward the finish line. Children of all ages will be captivated as they root for their favorite furry friends.

The Montpelier Market

Make sure to explore the vibrant Montpelier Market, where local Virginia artisans and craftspeople showcase their unique goods alongside imports from Ireland, England, and other far-off places. Some kid-friendly goodies have included children’s books about horses, plush pony toys and more.

Kid-Friendly Tailgates at the Montpelier Hunt Races

Tailgating at the Montpelier Hunt Races is an experience in and of itself! This is next-level tailgating, complete with a contest you can enter. If you enjoy tailoring decor and menus to a good theme (I know I do!), then you’ll love creating a spread. Check the Montpelier website for more details on this event, tailgating rules, and inspiration! It is common to see multiple generations tailgating at their favorite spot they have had reserved for decades. In addition to the Montpelier Hunt Races, you might also attend Polo at King Family Vineyard or the Foxfield Races Family Day.

What To Pack for a Day at the Montpelier Hunt Race with Kids

To help your day at the Montpelier Hunt Races with kids run smoothly and keep the little ones happy, here’s a handy packing list of must-haves for a day at the races:

  • Dress the kids in something bright – think UVA orange scarf or cap – so they are easy to spot
  • Sunscreen to protect your family from harmful UV rays that show up even on cloudy days
  • Hats and sunglasses for a style moment and for practicality
  • Comfortable shoes or boots. While the event has its own equestrian style, this isn’t the day for heels! Remember you’ll be walking, and the grounds might be damp or rainy.
  • Bring fold-out chairs (like camping chairs) so you have somewhere to sit!
  • Pack a tailgate meal or some snacks and drinks to stave off any hangry moments! (Food trucks and vendors will also be available.)
  • It’s always a wise idea to have some cash on hand at festivals. Virginia wifi can be spotty and cord readers can fail.
  • Find more healthy actvity ideas and learning fun on these pages. You might even download some free printable coloring sheets for the kids to enjoy on the way there in the car.
