Reptiles, Road Trip & Ice Cream: Our Family Day at My Three Chambered Heart

Looking for a wildly memorable day trip from Charlottesville? Just a short 45-minute drive brings you to a true hidden gem—My Three Chambered Heart, a nonprofit reptile museum that’s as charming as it is educational. And yes, it may just be Virginia’s only dedicated reptile museum, which makes it all the more special.

Hands-On Learning Kids Can Touch at the Reptile Museum

What sets this reptile museum apart is the level of interaction. Your child won’t just walk past tanks—they’ll be invited to gently hold reptiles, feel different textures, and ask all the questions their curious minds can muster. The staff is not only knowledgeable but passionate, making every demo feel like a personalized science show.

We met a variety of species—from inquisitive corn snakes and slow-blinking bearded dragons to an impressively gentle ball python and a charismatic leopard gecko. You might even see a blue-tongued skink poking out from under a log or get to observe a turtle paddling calmly in its tank. It’s a collection carefully curated for both education and awe. The team at My Three Chambered Heart have honed their presentations hosting lots of popular field trips and classroom visits.

Easy to Supervise = Less Stress, More Fun

The reptile museum is not overwhelming in size. That means you can let the kids explore without constantly scanning a giant space or feeling like you are rushing through a theme park. It’s engaging but manageable. It makes for a relaxed, meaningful visit where we all actually had fun together.

Skeletons, Sheds & Science in Every Corner

Beyond the living residents, the reptile museum features thoughtful exhibits that make science feel hands-on and accessible. There’s a variety of striking reptile skeletons on display and a touch station showing how a snake sheds its skin, complete with real examples and fascinating facts.

We loved how these mini-exhibits were positioned at kid-level and paired with tactile models and labeled diagrams, turning abstract biology into something tangible. Every corner seems designed to spark curiosity—from comparing the textures of real and replica scales to examining the difference between reptile eggs and amphibian development.

Engaging Demonstrations & Real Animal Encounters

The scheduled demonstrations are what really steal the show. Whether it’s a feeding session with a monitor lizard or a talk on how snakes hunt and eat without limbs, these interactive presentations are full of surprises. The reptile museum educators are fantastic at breaking things down so that kids stay engaged, while still keeping things scientifically rich for older students and grown-ups alike. I really appreciated that the museum hosts checked in with us once in a while to offer an opportunity to pet something the kids were particularly captivated by or offer up a few fun facts.

Bonus Fun: Ice Cream Next Door!

After your visit to the reptile museum, head just next door to the gas station (yes, really!) where you’ll find a Dairy Queen with outdoor picnic tables. It’s the perfect way to unwind after all the excitement—treats, sunshine, and lots to talk about on the drive home. My kids couldn’t stop comparing their favorite animals between bites of soft-serve.
