Your Guide to Christmas Tree Recycling in Charlottesville and Albemarle County

Before your live Christmas tree leaves your home for good, here’s some exciting news. That once beautifully decorated centerpiece can be recycled locally and transformed into free mulch for the community! Both the City of Charlottesville and Albemarle County make recycling easy with curbside pickup and eight convenient drop off locations. Instead of ending up in a landfill, your tree will be chipped into mulch that everyone can use after the New Year.

“Anytime you can recycle, you’re doing great things for the environment,” says Jim Barbour, superintendent of parks at Albemarle County Parks and Recreation.

Before You Recycle Your Tree

Before recycling your Christmas tree from the farm, be sure to remove all decorations, lights, tinsel, ornaments, stands, and nails. Keep your tree unwrapped and avoid putting it in a plastic bag. Only live Christmas trees are accepted, so wreaths and other yard waste cannot be included in these programs.

Make the Most of Recycling Your Christmas Tree

Recycling your Christmas tree is a simple way to do something good for the environment and your community. You can help by recycling on schedule, sharing the program with neighbors, or even finding creative ways to reuse your tree at home first. Your tree can provide temporary shelter for birds or help prevent erosion in your garden. Help Virginia wildlife by donating your live, untreated Christmas tree to the Wildlife Center of Virginia where it will be reused as enrichment to support natural behaviors and keep their patients active. Families might also consider a live potted tree that can be replanted after the holidays for even more impact.

By recycling your Christmas tree, you’re giving it a second life while supporting local sustainability. Plus, you get a practical bonus: free mulch for your yard or garden. It’s an easy post-holiday habit that makes a lasting difference in your community.
