The Glass Palette

The Glass Palette is one of those only-in-Charlottesville spots. It’s an interactive glass art studio where you walk in, pick a project, and actually make something out of glass to take home. It’s run by a Charlottesville mother-daughter team, and it recently moved into a new, larger studio space.

Beyond drop-in creating, the Palette runs classes and workshops in techniques like fused glass, stained glass, mosaic, sandblasting, and bead making, and it hosts summer studio camps for kids, where campers come back year after year. It’s a reliable pick for creative birthday parties and private events, too. One nice logistical detail parents will appreciate: there’s plenty of free parking behind and around the building, and the studio is set up to mail finished pieces if you’re traveling.

What To Expect on a First Visit

Reserve a table first, then come in and choose a project. You’ll find anything from ornaments and sun catchers to bowls, plates, coasters, and jewelry. Someone walks you through cutting and arranging your glass, and you design your piece flat; it then takes its final shape in the kiln. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting a little messy. Because everything gets fired, your finished art isn’t same-day, it’s typically ready to pick up in about three weeks, or the studio can ship it to you. Classes and workshops are generally geared toward older teens and adults, while walk-in creating and summer camps welcome younger kids, so there’s a path for every age.
