I find myself in a lot of Charlottesville coffee shops. Sometimes I’m seeking a few precious hours to work by myself or finally catching up with a friend. On a rainy afternoon, you might find me with my two young children chattering away about our days and sipping cocoa. Frequently, I’m just running in and out for a really good cup of coffee.

Best Local Coffee Shops in Charlottesville & Albemarle
It should be a given that a college town has good coffee. Sadly, we all know this isn’t always the case. But here in central Virginia, our towns are overflowing with excellent coffee shops.
Sure, you can plenty of locations for the big national coffee chains around town. But the best coffee shops around town are independently run. Some of them are local chains with multiple locations, others have just one storefront. At all of them you’ll find families, friends, and university students sharing the space and creating community over a great cup of coffee.

Atlas Coffee
Location: 2206 Fontaine Ave. Ext., Charlottesville
Hours: Mon–Sat • 7am–3pm
Atlas Coffee is a longtime neighborhood favorite in Fry’s Spring where you’re likely to run into someone you know. Serving locally roasted coffee and homemade syrups, the cozy atmosphere and free Wi-Fi make it an excellent place to linger over coffee or get some work done.
Baine’s Books & Coffee
Location: 707 Valley St., Scottsville
Hours: Mon–Sat • 8am–5pm | Sunday • 9am–4pm
Baine’s is a classic small-town café. It combines rich coffee with new and used books, vinyl, and local art in Scottsville’s Historic District. Come for the coffee, leave with a book: two of my favorite things in one!
Belle Restaurant & Bakery
Location: 407 Monticello Rd., Charlottesville
Hours: Daily • 8am–2pm
Belle is a neighborhood bakery and restaurant in Belmont that serves coffee, sourdough pastries, and food. During the day it feels like a neighborhood café. Evenings shift to stylish dinner service.
Botanical Fare
Location: 421 E Main St., Charlottesville
Hours: Sun & Tues • 9am–3pm | Wed & Thurs • 9am–8pm | Fri & Sat • 9am–9pm
At Botanical, you’ll find a plant-based café known for thoughtfully prepared breakfasts, lunches, and excellent coffee. They’re conveniently located on the Downtown Mall. Be sure to note that the restaurant is closed on Mondays.
The Bradbury Café
Location: 300 E Main St., Charlottesville
Hours: Mon–Fri • 8am–2pm
This coffee shop is a hidden gem on the Downtown Mall, located inside the Bradbury. Stop by for excellent coffee and food, plus plenty of seating for working or meeting a friend.
Camellia’s Bar & Roastery

This stylish café serves expertly roasted coffee, espresso drinks, teas, and snacks with relaxed seating. It’s equally suited to grabbing an espresso or settling in with a laptop.
Cou Cou Rachou

Cou Cou Rachou is a favorite local destination for delicious french pastries and expertly crafted espresso drinks. I recommend stopping by there early before the pastries sell out!
Cumbre Coffee & Bakery

This coffee shop has Latin-inspired flavors you won’t find anywhere else in town. Their coffee and pastries are a luxurious treat in person or to-go. A small parking lot is available next door.
C’ville Coffee & Wine

This Charlottesville institution is a favorite for families because of its designated spaces. A kids’ corner has toys and space for busy little ones to move, while a separate “quiet room” is set aside for work only. Enjoy the friendly staff, spacious café, and many options for food and drinks.
Give & Take Coffee

Greenberry’s

Greenberry’s is a Charlottesville classic serving specialty coffee, espresso, and baked goods. The first location was opened at Barrack’s Road Shopping Center in 1992 and is still there. You’ll also find other locations at Martha Jefferson Hospital and the University of Virginia Law School.

JBird Supply is a beloved spot for specialty brews, cold brew to-go, and treats from Florosa. The space is relaxed, creative, and easygoing. Find them in their new home in the Linen on Market building, near Firefly Restaurant & Game Room.
Kindness Café & Play

This mission-driven café doesn’t just sell coffee, snacks, and space to relax or work. It also supports inclusive employment and offers a joyful, community-focused environment. The McIntire Park. Dr. location is inside the Brooks YMCA, but you don’t need to be a member to go into the café for a drink and a snack.
Lone Light Coffee

Long-time residents will tell you that Mudhouse is a crucial part of Charlottesville’s coffee story. This well-loved roastery café has multiple locations and serves single-origin coffees and espresso drinks with a vibrant community vibe. The 240 W. Main St. location is inside the CODE coworking building.
Praha Bohemian Bakery & Café
Location: 5778 Three Notch’d Rd., Crozet

This Czech-inspired bakery café brings a taste of Prague to Crozet, with traditional pastries like koláče, medovník, and kremrole alongside bagels, sandwiches, coffee, and espresso drinks.
