Mahjong in Charlottesville: Where to Learn, Play & Shop

words by Amanda Danaher
From beginner classes and casual games to Cville mahjong groups, leagues, sets and accessories

There’s something instantly calming about the game of Mahjong. Maybe it’s the tiles themselves, with their intricate colors and designs and satisfying weight in your hand. Of course, Mahjong is more complicated than those pretty tiles might suggest.

Learning the game takes time, patience, skill, a little grit, and a bit of luck. There are rules to learn, strategies to develop, and a whole new vocabulary to pick up along the way.

If you’ve been wondering where to learn Mahjong in Charlottesville, where to find a game or group, or even where to buy a set, you don’t have to look far. Charlottesville has several ways to get connected. Whether you’re completely new to the game or already know your dragons from your winds, here’s where to start.

What is Mahjong?

Mahjong is a tile-based game of strategy and chance in which players draw and discard tiles to build winning hands. And yes, those pretty little pieces of acrylic (bone or bamboo if you own a traditional set) are called tiles. They feature dots, bamboo, and characters, along with special tiles such as winds and dragons, and, in the American version, jokers.

Originating in China in the mid-to-late 1800s, Mahjong made its way to the United States in the early 1920s, thanks in large part to Joseph Park Babcock, an American businessman who had learned the game while living and working in China.

While the game has several versions played around the world today, each holds its own set of rules, scoring, traditions, and strategies. Part of what makes Mahjong so engaging is that no two games play out exactly the same way. You have to pay attention to the tiles you’re drawing, watch what other players are discarding, and adjust your strategy as the hand develops. There’s plenty of luck involved, but knowing when to take a risk, change direction, or hold onto a particular tile is where the strategy comes in.

Why Are There Different Spellings of Mahjong?

The different spellings, including Mahjong and Mah Jongg, come from variations in how the game was introduced and adapted in different countries.

So, how do you know which version you are playing? It’s all in the spelling.

Chinese Mahjong is one of the traditional forms of the game and the version most closely connected to Mahjong’s Chinese origins. It is typically played with 144 tiles, including suits, honors and bonus tiles, and follows its own rules for building winning hands and calculating scores.

Riichi Mahjong is the Japanese variation of Mahjong. It uses a 136-tile set and has its own rules and scoring system, including riichi, a declaration made when a player is one tile away from completing a winning hand.

American Mah Jongg, which is especially popular in Charlottesville, adds a few elements that make it distinct from other versions. Remember Babcock? He simplified the rules for Western players, but with different groups playing by different rules across the county. The game in America eventually needed some standardization. In 1937, a group of Mahjong enthusiasts in New York founded the National Mah Jongg League.

One of the biggest differences you’ll notice is the National Mah Jongg League card, which is updated every year. American Mah Jongg players use the card to determine which hands are playable during that year. The card lists specific combinations of numbers, suits, and symbols, and players work to collect the tiles needed to complete one of those hands. Because the card changes every year, even experienced players have something new to learn.

The Brain Benefits of Playing Mahjong

All that thinking around the Mahjong table may be doing more than helping you build a winning hand. According to the University of Virginia’s Contemplative Sciences Center, Mahjong engages several skills associated with brain health, from memory and cognitive flexibility to decision-making and social connection.

Think about everything your brain is doing during a single game. You’re recognizing patterns, remembering which tiles have been discarded, adjusting your strategy as new tiles appear, and making decisions without knowing exactly what the other players are holding. That combination keeps working memory and executive function engaged throughout the game.

There’s also something to be said for continuing to learn. New strategies, changing hands, and the challenge of adapting your play provide ongoing mental stimulation. UVA points to neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to form and reorganize neural connections through learning and new experiences, as another reason activities that continually challenge us can support brain health.

But some of the benefits may have less to do with the tiles and more to do with the people sitting across from you. Mahjong gets people around a table, face-to-face, talking, laughing, and sharing a regular activity. Strong social connections are associated with better health and well-being, making the social side of the game an important part of the picture.

Even the repetitive rhythm of sorting, drawing, and moving tiles may encourage you to stay focused on the present moment.

So while you may have come for the pretty tiles and friendly competition, the mental challenge, continued learning, and connection around the table give you a few more reasons to keep playing.
